Organisms rely on a subset of elements in the periodic table to survive. While there are several elements that are essential for all life on earth, other elements are beneficial or essential only to certain organisms. When necessary elements become limiting, cells adjust their chemical composition to respond to the changing environment. Click on an element to see how it functions in cells of different organisms, and the variety of ways in which cells adapt and acclimate to limitation of the element.
